ABOUT

ABOUT SIMON GREETHAM

Perth-based painter Simon Greetham strips away extraneous detail to create paintings that embrace the philosophy that less is more. His simple evocative paintings explore everyday moments and emotions, inviting viewers to connect with the ordinary.

“My artwork reflects my own internal dichotomy. On the one hand, I'm drawn to the precision and logic of abstract geometric forms that allow me to exercise the rational and analytical side of my mind”

“On the other hand, I'm compelled to express the more intuitive and emotional aspects of my being through my abstract-figurative paintings. A practice where the rational gives way to more freedom of expression.”

“Many of my works sit in a liminal space where figurative meets abstract, where forms shift between known and unknown, and emphasis moves between real and imagined.”

“The subtle interplay of line, form and colour speak to the complexities of memory, feeling and experience - a reflection of my own inner world, marked by melancholy, nostalgia and the quiet moments in between”.

“The juxtaposition of these two practices reflects the balance within me - the logical, controlled side in dialogue with the spontaneous, emotional side. Through my work, I aim to reconcile these opposing forces, creating a visual language that is at once both harmonious and discordant.”

Artistic Journey

“For me, painting is like a journey across an unknown land. An exploration, where I know what I hope to see. A journey where only the general direction is known. Inevitably I take the wrong path sometimes or discover a dead-end. It’s always a journey of learning regardless of whether there’s an immediate aesthetic pay-off”.

“The ‘journey’ analogy is useful in explaining the breadth of my work. What appears to some as tangential or unconnected to my recent work, for me seems perfectly logical. I see the thread; I understand the reason for the departure from the previous works. It’s part of the journey; eventually I re-join the road where I left off, and sometimes it allows me to re-join much further down the road”

A word on quality

“Throughout the art process, quality is forefront in my mind. I’m very lucky that as well as being an artist, I am a qualified picture-framer, so I get to control quality at every stage. Collector satisfaction is very important to me, and that is only achieved by attention detail in every step of the process”. Please feel free to contact me to discuss any aspect of my work.
